Gen Z Votes

ARISE youth leader and activist alum (now college students at Smith, Wheaton, URI and more) came together to launch a virtual campaign and rally their peers for their historical and crucial first vote. Launched on National Voter Registration Day, ARISE social media informed and prepared the community for election day and emphasized why #GenZVotes. Participants submitted photos with the call to action and personal statements about why they vote. Read some of them here!

2020 Census

We worked with DARE and PrYSM on reaching out to our ‘Hard to Count’ communities. We know that our communities specifically SEA’s do not have access or know much about completing the census. That is why on August 22, 2020, we hosted a census visibility day at DARE where we emphasized the importance of completing the census while providing free bags of groceries that included masks, hand sanitizer, and $25 gift cards.

Voter Registration

As election day approached, we knew that every vote would count and that the voices of our communities had to be heard! We partnered with DARE and PrYSM to continue census outreach along with voter education and access. On September 19, 2020, we offered census visibility and voter registration services at DARE. Engaged community members were offered free bags of groceries provided by a local farm, that included masks and $10 gift cards. Registered voters were also entered in a raffle for assorted gift baskets.

Vote Yes On 1

As election day approached, we held multiple workshops with our youth leaders about the importance of voting, the history and current reality of voter suppression, and what values and beliefs are at stake. We examined Proposition 1, a Name Change Amendment that would remove “Providence Plantations” from the official state name of Rhode Island. Youth Leaders organized to show their support for the campaign virtually and worked as a team to create several hashtags to bring awareness to proposition and its significance.

Our Actions During the State Takeover

When the state took control of Providence Pubilc Schools in 2019, we formed OurSchoolsPVD – an alliance of Providence youth-led organizations and allies – working together for Education Justice For PPSD, and to ensurethat youth and the community have a say in what happens to our schools.
