The Alliance of Rhode Island Southeast Asians for Education Justice (ARISE) stands in full support of House Bill 5959’s proposal to allow those who are at least sixteen (16) years of age to register to vote and to vote in school committee elections in municipalities where school committees are elected entities.
Below are direct testimonies from our Youth Leaders, all of whom are High School students of color in Rhode Island.
“Students deserve to have a seat at the decision making table. They deserve to be seen and heard while having the power to actually implement the changes they are fighting for. They are the ones most directly impacted by the changes that are being made and therefore, they should have a true say in these issues. Allowing students to vote provides a chance for youth voice to be amplified while also promoting crucial processes of civic education and engagement. Giving students this power and responsibility is only fair, they should be the ones deciding their future just as they will have to do for the rest of their lives.” - Gabby
“If students are required to attend school they should have a voice in dictating what impacts their everyday lives.” - Ailani
“This allows different opinions and views on topics that need much discussion. Especially at this age are kids starting to realize the issues at the school and speaking up. The schools need any and every open mind they have.” - Sarah
